Tribute to Ong Noi

My dear Ong Noi, my dear grandpa.

You were so smart, you were so strong.
You had big dreams for me, all along.
You wanted me to become a doctor,
And then continue to be a professor,
And you had that unwavering faith in me
As your granddaughter, no wrong you could see.

I had it all planned months and months early,
As soon as I would graduate, in LA I would be.
I wanted to make you a new set of teeth
So that you could smile and happily eat.

Two years ago, the American board I had to do.
It was in San Diego, three hours away from you.
When I said in LA I wanted to go
Everyone started shrieking and said no.
The Canadian board was but 10 days away,
I had to study hard and without delay.
Christmas and graduation were just around the corner,
Surely I would see you sooner rather than later.

So I left San Diego pushing away this creeping feeling,
That it was an incredible mistake, a bad omen, so unappealing.
As soon as I landed back in Texas, I was told
"Grandpa fell ill and was hospitalized on your way home".
I called everyone and immediately wanted to fly back,
Auntie told me "Don't worry silly child, and give yourself some slack.
He's already better now and sleeping. Go, focus, study and pass."

A white lie it was, and somehow I think I knew,
That it was already too late, and started feeling blue.
A day later, the phone rang loud and clear, that dreaded call...
For two days straight, I cried and bang my head against the wall,
Sacrifices are needed, but I was drowned in sorrow, guilt and distress
For dreams should not make you miss your grandpa's last breath.

When I got numb from crying, I finally fell asleep.
That is when you visited and said in your voice so deep:
"Viet-Tram, dear child, don't you see?
There's nothing you could do to come to me.
So here I am instead, by your side in the clouds
Now stand back up and make me proud..."

So I got out of bed and in a daze went back to my books.
Five days later I passed my board despite all hooks.
And another four months later I received an offer,
To go back to Canada and become a professor.

Six months after your visit, I finally graduated...
Grandpa how I wished you had been there to celebrate.
You left us just short of me achieving your dream,
The irony of this really makes me want to scream.

I swallow it all up though, because I really know
That ever since that day, you're by my side watching me grow.
For there's no way I would have achieved all this,
Without you watching over me, making my life a bliss.

I miss you Ong Noi...

Souvenirs of Scottsdale

Unbelievable... I think everyone around me shopped more than I did in Scottsdale. That is just wrong. Next year in Baltimore better be gewd to make up for it!!!
Regardless, I have to say it felt good to see everyone again after so long. See you around the next meeting :)

Blast from the past 2

I can't believe I haven't drawn anything decent in more than a month, and I'm starting to feel bad about it... Good news is that in my last bout of insomnia, I started visiting my old blog pages (remember MySpace? Xanga? Friendster? Msn Spaces?) and found some of the lost Asiates and DMD Chronicles. Hope it brings you back good memories until I find the energy to draw new stories!

back to school

Alright, I know this is not time relevant anymore... but I drew this all the way back in Hawaii before I realized there was no wireless to post it. And when I got back, it was so busy I just forgot about it...

Anyways, I figured it would be a shame not to post it since it was ready to go :p More to come soon.

Bad Hair Day

Haven't drawn anything over the last few weeks... I can finally confirm that, contrary to popular belief, summer IS the most busy time of the year for faculty :s
Anyways, before we get into the crazy rush of back to school: yes, I did cut my hair short again. Oh, and colored too... ;) Ta ta!

Day dreaming

Can you actually dream in your dream while you're awake?
I am sure some of you remember how I was dozing off but still scribbling notes in class... and I would wake up and read my nonsense in dismay... I do not understand how my ears were positively listening to the newest implants literature while my hands were writing about castles and dragons...
Maybe we should start a double-blind prospective study.
It would involve subjects taking notes while listening to a soporific essay inside an MRI scanner.  I want to find a pathway to connect my ears to my hand in an automatic motion so I can day dream as much as I want ;)
The next step after that would be the pathway to memorizing while completely asleep ;)
Haha one can only dream. Have a good week everyone!

Work

So it was a long weekend here... And I just realized that there is something definitely wrong with how I spend my weekends...
Time to grab my bike and get some sun and fresh air.
And I also need a real vacation...
With that said, happy BC Day everyone!

Weather Problems

Be it extreme warmth or extreme cold, the result is the same: we take cover, do clothes management or stay inside. Sorry for my friends in Montreal, Houston and Baltimore who are fighting with the worst heat waves of the last few decades. Should I rub it in by mentioning it's a sunny 22C here in Vancouver? ;) Hang in there guys!

Research

Sometimes, doing research feels like a terrible quest... but it is so rewarding when you finally get to the end! Good luck to my friends about to defend their thesis :)

Professional meetings part 2

This concludes the PCSP chapter. Thanks for a great meeting everyone! It was a lot of fun :) I truly hope next year's meeting in Victoria will be as cool. See you there!

Tuesday 12 July 2011

the value of professional meetings...

Sorry for the long interruption... I'll try to post more in the next few days to make up for it :p PCSP part 2 coming soon.

PCSP

So I was at PCSP this weekend, and I have to say there wasn't a dead moment to draw. So there won't be any release this week, but I promise a long one soon about all the events that took place ;) Crazy Prosthodontists trapped in the same super fancy hotel in LA for 3 days is bound to be eventful. Cheers!

The riot...

This was supposed to be Game 7, the game all of Canada was watching full of hope. I decided to go downtown to watch this oh so important game with some friends at 4:00PM. Bars were full everywhere, and soon after,  there was this first goal... The crowd felt different. I left. Transits were scarce but operational. It was 6:00 PM. By the time I got off the bus, the second goal was scored...

I turned the tv as soon as I got home, just in time to watch the last 10 minutes of the game. 7:30PM My friend that I had left behind in downtown texted me "Everything is quiet, no worries, people are really calm". I thought "This is not Montreal after all... maybe it was just my scary imagination and we won't have a riot"

And then it went so fast. 7:45PM My friend sent me another text "I smell something burning", followed by "switch channel to RDI". Cars on fire. People breaking windows, looting. Voices of reporters that just got their cameras smashed. Transits completely cut. No more ways in and out of downtown except by the sky train that obviously couldn't handle 100,000 people at once... And images of war zones filmed in the area I left just 2 hours before... This was even bigger than any riot that ever happened in Montreal. It must have been a nightmare!

I think everyone in Vancouver woke up in total disbelief and with tears in their eyes... but then this message of hope: hundreds of Vancouverites spontaneously volunteering to clean the mess. Thank you for showing us the true face of Vancouver, the true face of Canada and hopefully images that I hope will slowly erase this awful night, so that we can only remember how beautiful our home is.

On a side note, good luck to my colleagues who are cycling for the Ride to Conquer Cancer this weekend. May sun follow you and wind gently blow in your back to help you along the way. I'm proud of working alongside such amazing people :) Cheers!

Hockey fever...

I'm not even that big a fan... When the Habs were eliminated, I have to admit I couldn't care less about the Canucks. But what can I say, hockey fever is REALLY strong around here and VERY contagious!
So Go Canucks Go! I don't care if you take 6 or 7 games, just bring that cup back to Canada!!!

Life on the high road

True story, although it was a scratch on a friend's Ferrari, supposedly by some grudgeful patient...
Life is a balancing act full of ambiguities: on one hand, patients want their care provider to be reasonably successful to reinforce their belief that you are capable at what you do. On the other hand, they don't want to feel robbed. So keep your nice cars for weekends or at least don't park in your doctor's reserved spot :p

Summer fun?

Diet, exercises and bikinis... These were the recurring themes in all my gals discussions lately so I figured it was definitely time to include them here ;)
Enjoy your summer everyone!

To be on time is to be late...

Some things never change: I love to snooze, and will always make it just on time... or fashionably late :p

And to my detractors who say "just wake up 5mn earlier!"... That's 35mn less sleep per week, 2h20 a month, 30 hours less a year... During a residency where you get an average of 4 hours of sleep a night, every minute counts! I rest my case. Good night people!

Listening to our seniors...

It's not because we never listened to our seniors (because we occasionally did ;)), but because we Angels thought monochromatic life was really really dull. Residency was stressful enough as it is, we had to find something to make it a bit fun! And who knew there were actually fashion trends in scrubs??? :p

So I thought I would celebrate the 10th strip of Life starts After by publishing a colored one for a change :) Thanks for your continuous following guys and I'll do my best to release them regularly :)

PS: if the image appears blurry, you can click on it and it will forward you to the original crisp jpeg. Enjoy!

Age is an irrelevant number

Dear RT, this one is specially for you, for nagging me about forgetting your birthday ;) If you want me to remember your exact date, I have to write it in my iPhone... And for that, I need the year otherwise it won't let me write it in :p

Anyways, I remember I was just passed my own 10,000 days mark when we last celebrated your birthday together... For those who are wondering, that's 27 years, 4 months and 16 days :p which for me was February 10th 2010... So RT's birthday is somewhere around Valentine's day...

... I think I just realized how geeky all this must sound right now. All these years as resident must have left me brain dead :p

Social life when hospital bound...

Ah my Texas gals... I can count on the tip of my fingers the number of time we actually managed to hang out all Amalfi-four together... Seems like our call-schedules never wanted to match. We still haven't done that Austin road-trip, sigh*

But every time we actually got together really felt like huge celebrations, however short they were... I do think it was a good thing, although outside observers would probably see that as borderline pathetic :s One thing is sure though: I miss you gals!

PS: This is officially my first cartoon drawn on my ipad ;) A bit awkward at first, but I think I got the hang of it toward the end... More to come soon!

Blast from the past

Hi everyone! Sorry but I've been having scanner problems :s Could not upload my new cartoon strip... So until I figure out what's going on, I'm uploading one of the old DMD Chronicles from 2005. Cheers!

Some letters change your life...

So the senior class students are currently waiting for their letter from the CDA board... Remember how that felt? The run back home from university every day... The hours waiting for the postman... The nervous shuffle through the mail... And finally the cold sweat tearing up THAT letter out of its envelope... Awww...

Thursday 24 March 2011

Waiting for the iPad2...

So I am hoping to get my hands on an iPad2 to be able to draw anywhere... Meanwhile I am practicing on the iPhone... That coupled with the fact that my best friend JKT was in town visiting last week are my excuses for not posting a strip this week :p I promise I'll post something more substantial next week to make up for this... For the time being, enjoy my first go using a stylus and iPhone drawing apps ;)

Thursday 17 March 2011

Why there's no tv shows about dentists...

During all these years, I got a second degree burn from boiled wax of the processing tank... Stabbed my thumbs with burs... Witnessed my coresidents forgetting how crazily hot a casting ring can be and grab it bare hand... Had a classmate who got her hair stuck in the high speed motor trimmer... And our lab saw countless cut from buffalo knives... Sometimes I am surprised how we go through this with all our hair and fingers :p

Friday 11 March 2011

How to evaluate a good denture...

SLT, I am sure you still remember about this since it was your patient in undergrad :p I have to admit that after 4 years of only doing pros, I have yet to hear a patient complaint that beats this one...

Thursday 3 March 2011

Is there a doctor on board??

Oh the joys of flying... This really happened by the way. That's the order in which they asked for health care on Air Canada.  So glad it didn't get to the dentist because I am so drowsy when I fly, I most probably wouldn't be capable of any sane diagnosis...

Meetings are temples of learning...

Dear Director, thank you for giving us tough love, always keeping an eye on us wherever we went, so that we would become the best we could...

This year was my first Chicago meeting without my two co-angels... Miss you gals!

Sunday 20 February 2011

Never run after a Canadian...

My sweet AD, now that I am not around, I hope you are walking slowly and carefully on the icy roads of Eastern America...

Friday 18 February 2011

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

On February 14th 2006, I woke up to a text message from my senior EE:
"Snowstorm, school closed, enjoy sleeping in!"
Best VDay gift ever! (No pun intended; when going through residency, extra sleep scores WAY higher than chocolate and flowers)

Ever since I realized school would close at the first sight of a snowflake (unprecedented for someone from Montreal), I started calling the weather alert line every morning throughout the winter :p

PS: Radi, the first draft of my research protocol was due the day after that snowstorm. If we didn't have that day off, that would have been THE one deadline I would have blown. I AM born under a lucky star ;)

Figuring things out...

So my friend SL sent me this email asking me what happened to the cartoons I was drawing back in the days... Nothing really, I believe they are all still safely scanned on my backup drive. SL said it would be cool to post them online and add some new ones...

Alright, let's see if I can actually do this: I'll post one new strip every week. And for weeks that are just too crazy, I'll buy myself some time by posting old ones :p

But first, I have to figure out how this blog thing settings work. Wished I had asked my good friend FHM when she was still on this side of the ocean...

To be continued...
